The Latest Pixar News

Pixar may not have released a film this year, but they're still busy working on plenty of cool stuff.  We've got our first video for this year's Christmas special Toy Story That Time Forgot, the latest news on next year's releases Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur, and a clip from the short film Lava, which will be released with Inside Out!

This special brings back our favorite gang of toys, with Trixie the triceratops taking the starring role this time around.  Our first look at this film is actually tied into a commercial, but it's still pretty funny.  Toy Story That Time Forgot will air on December 2, 2014, on ABC.

Official Synopsis:
During a post-Christmas play date, the gang find themselves in uncharted territory when the coolest set of action figures ever turn out to be dangeorusly delusional.  It's all up to Trixie, the triceratops, if the gang hopes to return to Bonnie's room in this 'Toy Story That Time Forgot'.

While on the subject of Toy Story, the Blu-ray and DVD for last year's Halloween special Toy Story of Terror was released just recently on August 19th.  Sadly, I haven't had the chance to see it yet, but I'll definitely be getting myself one of those Blu-rays!

Pixar's next short film, titled Lava, is set to be released alongside Inside Out next summer on June 19th.  Yahoo! Movies released a clip from the short and an interview with director James Ford Murphy (also the head of Pixar animation), who discussed the challenges of creating the new short.

The video shows us a Hawaiian volcano named Uku singing about his longing for someone to 'lava' to a lovely ukulele tune.  It's...charming, I suppose.  My first thought was "Romance, again?"  Don't get me wrong, the short looks fantastic.  The design of Uku and the animation on his face is really amazing.  I guess I'm not as excited about this one as I am for Feast, scheduled to release with the upcoming Big Hero 6.  Maybe I'm just longing for something other than a short about romance.  Paperman was great, but then we had The Blue Umbrella, which was also charming but didn't really move me.  Get A Horse!, Disney Animation's short from last year, was a nice change from the romance theme.  Both Feast and Lava center on romance, but with Feast we're getting a really fresh take on the genre: seeing a relationship over the years through the meals shared between a dog and his master.

Even so, I am looking forward to the short.  Also bee sure to also check out the interview below with talented singer Kuana Torres Kahele, the voice of Uku, about his experience working on the short film.  Seems like this short could be a tear jerker, as the only thing Kahele will say about the fnished product is to bring tissues to the movie theater.

And speaking of Inside Out...Disney Movies Anywhere released a sneak peak of the highly anticipated film in the Monsters Univiersity Countdown of Secrets video.  Check it out below...this film looks absolutely amazing!

Pete Doctor, director of Inside Out (and Monsters Inc, my favorite Pixar film!), and producer Jonas Rivera give us a sneak peak behind the scenes tour of the film.  The character designs have been finalized, and now they're in the middle of animation.  Courtesy of Everything Pixar and The Rotoscopers, we have our first ever look at Reilly Anderson, a little girl whose mind is the setting of the film.

We've also got our first really good look at the emotions residing inside Reilly's mind: Anger, Fear, Disgust, Sadness, and Joy.

Anger, voiced by Lewis Black

Fear, voiced by Bill Hader

Disgust, voiced by Mindy Kaling

Sadness, voiced by Phyllis Smith

Joy, voiced by Amy Poehler
I just love the simplicity of these designs!  Pete Doctor is a big fan of legendary Disney artist Mary Blair (who was Walt's favorite artist in the animation studio), who created concept art for early films such as Peter Pan and Cinderella, and the Pixar crew drew a lot of inspiration from her work in designing the looks of the characters, especially in terms of color palette.  Doctor also describes the emotions as Pixar's version of the Seven Dwarves.  To prepare for animation, the crew studied the hand drawn animation of the Seven Dwarves and other characters such as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum from classic Golden Age Disney films to capture the same kind of squash and stretch animation for the emotions.

As far as the music for the film goes, a familiar face will be returning to write the score...Michael Giacchino!  Giacchino is no stranger to Pixar, having composed the music for the films The IncrediblesRatatouille, Up, and Cars 2, in addition to music for Pixar short films One Man Band, Lifted, La Luna, and the television special Toy Story of Terror.  He's one of my personal favorite composers, and I can't wait to see what amazing music he brings to us this time around.

And last but not least...a little update on the other Pixar film being released next year...The Good Dinosaur.

The Good Dinosaur has had a pretty rough time getting off the ground.  It was originally scheduled to be released earlier this year in May, but last summer it was announced that it would be pushed back to 2015, making next year the first time Pixar will release two films in one year.  The original director, Bob Peterson, was taken off the project.  There's been plenty of speculation as to who the new director would be, but Pixar has made no announcement.  Many thought that the co-director, Peter Sohn, would fill the role, but apparently he's overseeing it as part of Pixar's Brain Trust.

According to Collider.com, the film has been completely reworked.  Actor John Lithgow spoke with Collider in an interview and revealed that the he went back in to completely re-record his lines for his character of the father dinosaur.  That's a pretty big deal that the film is getting that much of an overhaul, but at the same time, I don't think it's that much cause for concern.  Pixar has given previous films, most famously Toy Story 2 and Ratatouille, major overhauls and new directors before, and for the most part they've been better off for it.  Cars 2 is really the only exception, but I'm convinced that film wasn't something Pixar went into willingly in the first place.  I'm feeling pretty good about Dinosaur, and I'm sure they'll put it in good hands.

I imagine we won't be hearing much about Pixar for a while, but with the way they've been promoting Inside Out, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to assume we'll be getting our first teaser trailer for the film with the release of Big Hero 6, which is the last Disney animated feature before Inside Out is released on June 19th, 2015.  I can't wait to see it!
