'Korra' Book 4 Official Trailer Debuts

Aw, yeah!  The official trailer for Book 4 has finally arrived...and it is AWESOME.  And bittersweet, and haunting, and beautiful, and even sad, because this is it, folks...the last season in the Avatar franchise.

There's so many cool things to look forward too!  The biggest thing that I wasn't expecting but I'm glad it is happening is the time jump; we're moving forward three whole years.  This is good because that means Korra has time to recover from her encounter with the Red Lotus without it being rushed through in just 13 episodes.  Plus, it's always cool seeing how characters look when they're older and have new looks!

It seems we'll be spending the season in the Earth Kingdom again.  I was hoping to spend time in the Fire Nation, but this makes more sense considering the events in Book 3, namely, the death of the Earth Queen.  The Earth Kingdom was in chaos as a result, and it seems that a struggle for leadership and to establish a new government has ensued.

There's so many things to analyze and speculate about, and honestly, it's best to do that while looking at screencaps from the trailer!  They aren't the greatest quality, but it's the best I could do.  So the first thing we see in between the title cards after the brief Book 3 flashback and Tenzin monolgue is Korra cutting her hair.  It's seems like a rebirth of sorts for her, similar to the scene in  Mulan where Mulan cuts her hair with her father's sword.

Airsuits!  Here we have Opal and Kai taking flight in some cool looking airsuits, inspired by Zaheer's powers of flight, perhaps?  It's great to see that the new Air Nation is embracing technology and isn't staying totally stuck in the past.

The return of the mecha suits from Book 1!  Hiroshi Sato, Asami's father, has been confirmed to return in this season of Korra and it seems the technological genius has been a busy guy.  These suits are much more advanced than the ones we saw in Book 1 that were used to give the average human an equal footing in a fight with a bender.  It's also great that we're seeing echoes of Book 1 returning, since that season has felt a little disconnected from Books 2 and 3.

It seems we'll be returning to that mysterious swamp from Book 1 of the original Avatar series...looks like Korra is taking a spiritual journey of sorts.  In the trailer, it almost looks like she's fighting a vision or mirage of herself from when she was battling Zaheer in the Book 3 finale.

I wonder if a civil war is brewing in the Earth Kingdom in the wake of the Queen's death...it seems that Kuvira, who seems to be the antagonist for the season, is leading a metal bending army.  Is she trying to unite the Earth Kingdom into a more militarized nation, similar to what the Fire Nation became during the One Hundred Year War?

Kuvira being a badass.  It's great to have a lady villain again, since Avatar hasn't really had a good one since Azula.

Bolin wearing either the military uniform or just citizen clothing from Zhao Fu...glad to see  he's still lavabending!  Couldn't get a decent screencap of that :(

Tenzin's kids taking flight in the new airsuits...Meelo's there too, behind Jinora.  As excited as I am to see more of these kids being awesome, I'm also interested to see how little Rohan is doing...is he an airbender like his siblings or is he a non-bender?

More visions of Korra from the finale of Book 3...

Korra presumably on her spiritual journey as she makes her way through a storm towards one of the portals to the spirit world...

Korra before the time jump...

More of Korra's battle in the swamp...I really love this slo-mo shot.  It's just gorgeous.

Opal looking despondent in the center of a cheering crowd...I'm glad we'll be getting some development for her this season since there really wasn't any room in the last book.  I wonder if she's at a military rally of sorts, with the military trying to recruit citizens or sway people in favor of a militarized state.

This is more of a minor thing, but it's still cool...we finally see Zuko's daughter, the Firelord!  She looks an awful lot like Mai...guess Zuko and Mai stayed together after all (they broke up again sometime in the comics, I believe).

Korra being a badass.  Love it.  The short hair really suits her; I think I love it more than her longer hair with the water tribe adornments.

Korra before the time jump, getting a little healing water treatment courtesy of Katara.

Kuvira looking sinister and badass.  I have to wonder...is she really the main antagonist of the season, or is she the face of a greater threat in the shadows?

Varrick and his assistant Zhu Li!!!!  I absolutely love Varrick; he's always a riot.  Hopefully we'll see some cool new inventions of his (a magnetic mecha suit, maybe?).  And how awesome is it that Zhu Li gets to do some fighting?  That woman puts up with a lot of crap from Varrick, and it'll be nice to see her have some of the spotlight.

Korra in the spirit world...I love that Korra's struggle for the season is not only to find balance in the world, but balance within herself.  Though we've seen from the trailer that she recovers physically, she still must recover spiritually and psychologically.  She has to come to terms with her fears that the world doesn't need the Avatar any more.  And it's entirely possible that the only way to bring balance to the world means the end of the Avatar.  Maybe it's time that people rely on themselves to take care of their problems instead of the Avatar, whom plenty of people seem to view as an old relic no longer needed in this modern society.  We'll have to wait and see...

And the biggest reveal of the trailer...in her journey, Korra has come across Toph!  We don't actually see Toph, we just see Korra looking at something completely shocked, and she says "I can't believe it...Toph?"  Whether she's dead or alive, we don't know, but I'm going to go for alive.  Dead would be so disappointing.

Only one more week, guys!  The Legend of Korra Book 4: Balance, the final season, premieres on Nickelodeon's website next Friday, October 3rd.
